Cindy Prascik's Review of The House With a Clock in Its Walls








































Dearest Blog: Though the weekend cinema offered little of any promise, Friday I headed up to Marquee Cinemas for The House With a Clock in Its Walls.
 
Spoiler level here will be mild, nothing you wouldn't know from the trailers.
 
A boy comes to live with his uncle in a creepy old house that holds a dangerous secret.
 
Mama always said, "If you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all." While that might not be *entirely* possible, we'll start with the positives here. The House With a Clock in Its Walls looks gorgeous. The score and cinematography set an eerie, magical tone that briefly gave me hope the film might be better than I anticipated. Cate Blanchett is mesmerizing, even punching well below her weight class, and, though the execution fails, the story itself is reasonably solid. The negatives, starting with the obvious: Kid actors are a crapshoot. Very few are good; more often you just hope they aren't bad enough or featured enough to be distracting. Owen Vaccaro is both bad enough and featured enough to be distracting, and Jack Black is more annoying than quirky or amusing as his oddball uncle. The last quarter of the movie features some inexplicably hokey effects, and, while the humor is rarely crass, a handful of bodily-function jokes aren't funny and certainly don't elevate the whole. The picture hadn’t reached its halfway point before the only clock I cared about was the one that would tell me it was over.
 
The House With a Clock in Its Walls runs 104 minutes and is rated PG for "thematic elements, including sorcery, some action, scary images, rude humor, and language."
 
The House With a Clock in Its Walls represents a sad misfire on what should have become a Halloween-season classic.

MOVIE REVIEW: A SIMPLE FAVOR







































A SIMPLE FAVOR, directed by Paul Feig, centers around Stephanie (Anna Kendrick), a mommy vlogger who seeks to uncover the truth behind her best friend Emily's (Blake Lively) sudden disappearance from their small town.

Review:

A Simple Favor is a twisty yet funny mystery that could have easily been written off like a Gone Girl knock off if not for Paul Feig’s style and wit.  Paul Feig has quietly become on of the stronger filmmakers working today.  Feig’s work has a great sense of style and humor that hard to find, in this film he crafts a classic Hitchcockian type of mysteries while satirizing it as well. It’s a delicate balance but he keeps going for the better part of the film even if the major reveal is slightly bungled and losing its impact.  The film’s strength is that it’s so fun and engaging that it barely matters.  Feig is also blessed with a stellar cast.  Anna Kendrick drives the film with a role that could be anymore suited to her talents.  Her and Blake Lively share solid chemistry with each playing off each other perfectly.  Their interactions are some of the best parts of the film.  Henry Golding is solid as the husband but in all honestly this film belongs to Kendrick and Lively.  A Simple Favor is one of the more unexpected cinematic surprises of the year.

Cindy Prascik's Reviews of The Predator & White Boy Rick


 
 
Dearest Blog: After a two-week hiatus, yesterday it was off to Marquee Cinemas for The Predator and White Boy Rick.
 
Spoiler level here will be mild, nothing you wouldn't know from the trailers.
 
First on my agenda: The Predator.
 
They're baaa-aaack...
 
I have sometimes been accused of using too many words, so today I'm going to tell you in not very many words, dear readers, that this movie is very stupid and I didn't like it. I love the original Predator. It is the only film in cinema history that has ever actually scared me. The latest entry in the series features hokey effects, lame dialogue, and action sequences that are frequently too dark to see much of anything. The tone feels wrong from the outset, with crass, unfunny stabs at humor. I fell for the entire cast quickly and against expectations, which was enough to provide the occasional briefly-entertaining interlude, but it was far too little to redeem the whole.
 
The Predator runs 107 minutes and is rated R for "strong bloody violence, language throughout, and crude sexual references."
 
The Predator exploits a popular franchise for a cash grab, an all-too-familiar Hollywood tale. Of a possible nine Weasleys, The Predator gets four.
 
Next on the docket, White Boy Rick.
 
In the Just Say No era, a young man from a troubled family says yes.
 
White Boy Rick is the disturbing true story of Rick Wershe, Jr., a Detroit-area teen who, seeing no other escape from his family's dismal existence, begins dealing drugs and ends up an FBI informant. The grimy reality of 1980s Detroit is the perfect backdrop for this depressing tale. It's difficult to watch, but outstanding work by the cast makes it worth your effort. There were some spots where I felt the film moved too quickly (such as explaining Rick's initial acceptance by his gang), but it's a petty quibble with a well-done picture that you'll be thinking about long after you leave the theater.
White Boy Rick clocks in at 110 minutes and is rated R for "language throughout, drug content, violence, some sexual references, and brief nudity."
 
White Boy Rick is a dark tale buoyed by superb performances across the board. 
 
Of a possible nine Weasleys, White Boy Rick gets seven.

MOVIE REVIEW: THE PREDATOR




From the outer reaches of space to the small-town streets of suburbia, the hunt comes home. Review:


The Predators is an odd film that can never figure out what it ultimately wants to be.  Shane Black directs this 6th screen appearance of the Predator and gives it a strange infusion of comedy.  The violent space hunters face off vs. a ragtag group of misfits who have a quip for every occasion.  The comedy is enjoyable but it feels out of place in the Predator franchise with long sequences veering incredibly close to self parody.  The actors are all fine even though some seems to be hamming it up, like Sterling K. Brown, while others are playing it straight like Boyd Holbrook. It makes for a choppy tone which makes the film just feel off.  It’s a shame because the film has potential particularly if they’d focused on the band of misfits.  The characters are all interesting enough but the film just doesn’t spend much time with them.  Instead we get Oliva Munn who just doesn’t fit in the film; it’s particularly glaring since the film also has Yvonne Strahovski but decides to use her in a throwaway role.  The Predator isn’t the return to form most fans were hoping and with the level of talent assembled you’d be remiss to think if it’s even possible at this point.

MOVIE REVIEW: THE NUN

Review:

The Nun is the second spinoff from The Conjuring series and even though there is a solid set up and strong cast it’s a terribly generic entry.  Corin Hardy seem intent on hitting just about every religious horror cliché as he guides his film from one jump scare to another.  Taissa Farmiga and Demián Bichir carry the film ably even if their characters are just overused tropes we’ve all seen before.  Farmiga is solid in her role but it’s a bit distracting that she looks like a carbon copy of her sister.  A fact that the film doesn’t bother using as a plot point, even though it’s a gift wrapped bit of casting magic.  Bichir is his usual strong self but the film doesn’t really take advantage of his acting chops.  Jonas Bloquet seems out of place as a French Canadian living in Romania which is as silly as it sounds.  The Conjuring films have always had a certain level of quality which makes the films special.  Sadly, the spinoffs have been built around cheap jump scares and recycled tropes making them utterly forgettable.

He soon decides to search the one place that no one else has -- Margot's laptop. Hoping to trace her digital footprints, David contacts her friends and looks at photos and videos for any possible clues to her whereabouts.

Review:

Searching is the type of film that’s based off a gimmick.  It’s not the first film to occur entirely on a computer screen but it’s one of the best.  First time director Aneesh Chaganty unfurls and impressively crafted mystery that’s entirely engrossing.  It’s hard to watch the film and not appreciate the effort and planning involved to create such a detailed and layered story using only computer screens.  John Cho is the heart of the film with his performance being the life blood that drives the entire endeavor.  Cho delivers a subtle measured performance that works perfectly for his character.  There’s an air of authenticity to his turn that grounds the film and helps you forget the gimmick quickly.  Debra Messing and Michelle La are both solid in supporting roles.  Messing is a tad robotic for my taste but it’s a small issue once the twist and turns really start unwinding in the film’s final act.  Searching is the type of film that is impressive on multiple levels and announces the arrival of Aneesh Chaganty as a fascinating director.

Cindy Prascik's Review of An Actor Prepares










































Dearest Blog: Thanks to a slow weekend at the cinema, yesterday I had the opportunity to catch up with Jack Huston's latest picture, An Actor Prepares, via XFinity On Demand.
 
Spoiler level here will be mild, nothing you wouldn't know from the trailers...if you've seen one, which I sure as heck didn't around here.
 
Declared too ill to fly from LA to New York for his "favorite" child's wedding, an aging, self-absorbed actor sets out on a cross-country road trip with his estranged son.
 
The burning questions:
 
1.) Will this film be as pretentious as its name? 
 
2.) Has Jack Huston finally found another vehicle worthy of his exceptional talent? (Been a long dry spell since Boardwalk Empire.)
 
Unfortunately, the answers are yes and no, respectively.
 
An Actor Prepares suffers a terminal case of Pilot Syndrome. You know, that very first episode of a television series, where every aspect of every character is super-sized to bring viewers up to speed as quickly as possible? Comic-book movies devote entire films to back story with their origins stories. Well-crafted movies educate with subtext so skillful as to be unnoticeable. This movie bangs you over the head again and again for the duration. The main characters not being very likable anyway, the exaggeration quickly grows old. Jeremy Irons has a gleeful ol' time as a self-centered thespian whose charisma fools all but those closest to him. For the first half of the movie, he almost fools the viewer as well, his escapades seeming hilarious to anyone not in the path of the fallout. As the obviously-NOT-favorite child, Huston does a terrific job of conveying the weariness that comes from surviving in the direct orbit of such a person, forever painted the bad guy, the buzz-kill, the wet blanket. The character is uptight and a little whiny, but layer on a troubled relationship and a failing career, and I didn't have a hard time forgiving him for it. (Your own ability to do so may rely solely on your position within your own family's pecking order.) An Actor Prepares is handicapped by poorly-written dialogue that is frequently crass just for the sake of it. "Deeper" moments are scored by dreadful emo songs as the film trudges to a predictable finale. The big screen dodged a bullet by sending this one straight to download.
 
An Actor Prepares clocks in at 97 minutes. The movie is unrated, but features adult situations, adult language, some nudity, and drug use.
 
An Actor Prepares is a slog that proves unworthy of its talented cast. 
 
Of a possible nine Weasleys, An Actor Prepares gets four and a half.

Cindy Prascik's Review of BlacKkKlansman







































Dearest Blog: Yesterday it was off to Marquee Cinemas for Spike Lee's BlacKklansman, touted as one of the year's best films thus far.
 
Spoiler level here will be mild, nothing you wouldn't know from the trailers or from the news if you're old enough.
 
Colorado Springs' first black police officer goes undercover to infiltrate the Ku Klux Klan. (Seriously.)
 
Unarmed with knowledge of the true story, one might naturally assume a yarn as absurd as BlacKklansman to be fictional comedy. The movie does, in fact, feature several laugh-out-loud moments. These ridiculous situations that seem hilarious in fiction are decidedly less so when based in reality (especially in today's climate), but the moments of levity are well-placed and necessary in a story that's pretty hard to stomach at times. Despite deliberate pacing, BlacKkKlansman never feels slow, though the harsh, hateful language and the tension of the case itself definitely made me fidgety. Much of the picture is so surprisingly quiet that, on those occasions when Terence Blanchard's score really rears its head, it feels a little jarring and out of place, but otherwise the musical selections are choice! Outstanding leads John David Washington and Adam Driver have terrific chemistry; Washington, in particular, carries the film with the ease of an old pro, despite having just eight acting credits on his resume. Director Lee expends a great deal of quality screen time focusing on individual faces in the crowds, as if begging viewers to remember we're all just people, no matter our ethnicity or heritage. BlacKkKlansman is the kind of essential film making that makes getting out to the cinema not just something you want to do, but something you HAVE to do.
 
BlacKkKlansman clocks in at 135 minutes and is rated R for "language throughout, including racial epithets, disturbing/violent material, and some sexual references."
 
BlacKkKlansman is that rare gem that truly earns the hype.

Fangirl points: Well, dear reader(s), this basic 70s white girl sure did enjoy hearing Emerson Lake & Palmer's "Lucky Man" in digital surround sound!

MOVIE REVIEW: BLACKKKLANSMAN









































From visionary filmmaker Spike Lee comes the incredible true story of an American hero. It’s the early 1970s, and Ron Stallworth (John David Washington) is the first African-American detective to serve in the Colorado Springs Police Department. Determined to make a name for himself, Stallworth bravely sets out on a dangerous mission: infiltrate and expose the Ku Klux Klan. The young detective soon recruits a more seasoned colleague, Flip Zimmerman (Adam Driver), into the undercover investigation of a lifetime. Together, they team up to take down the extremist hate group as the organization aims to sanitize its violent rhetoric to appeal to the mainstream.

Review:

Blackkklansman is one of Spike Lee’s best films in a while.  It’s funny, uncomfortable and incredibly timely.  Spike Lee isn’t shy about being fairly vocal and direct on his message and it fits perfectly for this stranger than fiction true tale.  John David Washington, Denzel’s son, has a strong screen presence which translates well to the big screen.  Washington is the driving force to the film and he handles it with an experienced ease that’s rare to find.  He and Adam Driver share a strong chemistry with both delivering strong performances.  I’m usually not the biggest fan of Driver but he fits the role well.  The supporting cast is made up of strong character actors like Topher Grace and Jasper Pääkkönen who really shine in their roles.  If there’s a small complaint its that Lee’s film could use a tad bit of trimming since the romantic subplot feels oddly forced.  It’s a minor complaint since the film is fairly enjoyable for the majority of its runtime.  It’s a rare kind of message movie that’s as funny as it’s impactful.

MOVIE REVIEW: THE HAPPYTIME MURDERS

Review:

Your enjoyment of The Happytime Murders will depend on how “cutting edge” you consider the conceit.  If you think it’s the first time felt puppets have gone R rated raunchy then it’ll be a more enjoyable experience than those are familiar with an old Peter Jackson film.  The Happytime Murders isn’t Meet The Feebles.  It’s raunchy and vulgar but it’s never as offensive as it thinks it is.  To its credit, the film does hold some solid laughs for people who came to see R rated hijinks on the puppet side of life.  Melissa McCarthy seems to be enjoying herself while partnering with her puppet partner.  McCarthy and Bill Barretta share some solid chemistry even if his character is just a 40’s noir detective.  The biggest drawback of Brian Henson’s film is that once you get past the puppet sex, drugs and vulgarity your left with a pretty standard film noir complete with a femme fatale.  It plays along those beats predictably throughout making it’s 90-minute runtime feel longer than it actually is.  It’s a shame that they didn’t take some more risk with their story and go for something truly outrageous.  Instead it plays it safe and starts to overstay it’s welcome as it heads toward the finale.  The Happytime Murders is one of those high concept films that has a great idea but doesn’t take advantage of its full potential.

Review:

Christopher Robin is a saccharine sweet bit of nostalgia that’s enjoyable and entertaining even though it’s an uneven tone.  Marc Forster’s film is well crafted from start to finish with a strong cast and impressive CGI.  Ewan McGregor turns in a charming performance even though character seems eerily similar to Georrge Banks from Mary Poppins.  The character is a bit more complex than expected and probably could have been explored a bit more.  Hayley Atwell makes for an equally charming wife to match McGregor.  The voice work turned in by Jim Cummings and Brad Garrett really stands out for Pooh and Eeyore, giving the film its sweet center.  The film does have a tinge of melancholy running through the entire film which makes for a strange tone for a children’s film. Christopher Robin never seems to decide if it wants to be a straight forward children’s film or a most measured meditation on rediscovering your youth.

Cindy Prascik's Review of The Meg







































Dearest Blog: Yesterday it was off to Marquee Cinemas for The Meg.
 
Spoiler level here will be mild, nothing you wouldn't know from the trailers or if you've seen one of these kinds of monster movies before...ever.
 
It's Statham vs. giant shark, and the winner is the box office!
 
Ladies and gentlemen, there's not a lot in this world that gets me more wound up than a new Jason Statham movie, and while sometimes he seems to go out of his way to prove I'll watch him in absolutely anything, this one's not so bad.
 
Let's get the negatives out of the way first: The Meg has its tense moments, but it's not super exciting. Part of the problem is the film is utterly lacking in surprises; every minute plays out exactly how you'd expect, making it feel longer than it is. The cast does the best it can with some truly awful dialogue, and, while my crowd seemed to enjoy the cheap laughs, I rolled my eyes so hard I'm surprised I'm not typing out the back of my head today. Finally, a giant, prehistoric shark should be about the most imposing thing you ever could see, yet somehow it never really earns a 50-foot screen; in fact, it seemed positively puny compared to the Bumblebee trailer that ran before.
 
Now the good news: Obviously: Jason Statham. I was afraid the large-ish cast would mean not enough Statham, but even if he's sharing the screen he's still on the screen most of the time. Win! The rest of the cast is pretty good and does what it can with the material; the fact that sometimes it's not much is never their fault. Regular reader(s) will know I'm no great fan of kids or kid actors, but flat-out adorable Shuya Sophia Cai steals this show right out from under its adult ensemble. The scramble for a PG13 rating kept blood and gore well within reason, too. (Yes, I know some would have put that in the "negatives" paragraph!) The Meg is a decent bit of fun buoyed by a good cast and some pretty scenery, even if it's too silly and drags on a bit at times.
 
The Meg clocks in at 113 minutes and is rated PG13 for "action/peril, bloody images, and some language." The Meg is just the sort of unremarkable brain candy you'd expect from Hollywood this time of year. 
 
Of a possible nine Weasleys, The Meg gets six. 
 
Oh, and, for the record: "You should put on some clothes," is never, EVER the correct thing to say to Jason Statham.

Cindy Prascik's Retro Review: Flashback Cinema Presents Big Trouble in Little China















Dearest Blog: Yesterday it was off to Marquee Cinemas for Flashback Cinemas' presentation of Big Trouble in Little China.

This film celebrated its 32 birthday on July 2nd, so if a review still manages to spoil something for you, at this point I feel like that's kinda on you.

Truck driver Jack Burton and his friend Wang Chi face the dark magic of the Motherland to rescue Wang's fiance, the elusive girl with green eyes, when she disappears in San Francisco Chinatown.
Big Trouble in Little China is one of those movies that, if it's running on any channel, it's probably on at my house, so it's a familiar old favorite that we watch without really watching sometimes.

Revisiting such classics on the big screen is a great way to ensure they get the undivided attention they deserve.

From its synth-heavy score to its hero's mullet and lace-up boots, there's no mistaking Big Trouble in Little China's 1980s vintage. The picture's indelible time-stamp and campy nature make dated effects and clumsy animatronics seem quaint. Kurt Russell ticks all the boxes as Jack Burton: he’s dashing enough for the action hero, charming enough for the romantic lead, and just bumbling enough to generate good comedy, but it's  Dennis Dun who steals the show as Wang Chi, Burton's friend who frequently is the real hero of the day. Kim Cattrall and Kate Burton are entertaining as gung-ho attorney Gracie Law and earnest reporter Margo Litzenberger, and James Hong’s David Lo Pan is nothing short of iconic. Impressive fight scenes with a martial arts flair never drag on too long (are you listening, 2018 Hollywood?), and, though the fashions may be dated, some of the cultural costumes are lovely. Finally, kids, if you *can* see the Three Storms come out of the sky on a big screen, you absolutely *should* see the Three Storms come out of the sky on a big screen.

Big Trouble in Little China runs a quick 99 minutes and is rated PG13 for “adult situations, language, and violence.”

Action, comedy, romance...Big Trouble in Little China has it all, and that is, in the immortal words of Wang Chi himself, “no horsesh**t.”

Of a possible nine Weasleys, Big Trouble in Little China gets nine.

MOVIE REVIEW: THE SPY THAT DUMPED ME








































The Spy Who Dumped Me tells the story of Audrey (Kunis) and Morgan (McKinnon), two best friends who unwittingly become entangled in an international conspiracy when one of the women discovers the boyfriend who dumped her was actually a spy.

Rated R for violence, language throughout, some crude sexual material and graphic nudity

Review:

The Spy That Dumped Me is one of those goofy comedies that light and easy but fairly forgettable.  It’s a shame because the two leads have strong comedic talents but the film never fully takes advantage of them.  Susanna Fogel directs her film with a zany energy which starts to lose steam towards then end.  Fogel switches from zany antics to hardcore spy action throughout the film making for a slightly choppy feel.  The movie just doesn’t find a steady groove even though there are plenty of laughs to be found.   Big chunk of the gags work mostly due to the Kunis and Mckinnon’s talents, in the hands of lesser actresses the film wouldn’t be nearly as funny.  Even they can’t keep the film from dragging in the last act.  These types of films should be quick and easy, a 2 hour runtime needs to be earned.  The Spy That Dumped Me could have used some editing which could have shaved off a good 20 minutes, making it a more effective comedy in the long run.

MOVIE REVIEW: MISSION IMPOSSIBLE - FALLOUT








































Ethan Hunt and the IMF team join forces with CIA assassin August Walker to prevent a disaster of epic proportions. Arms dealer John Lark and a group of terrorists known as the Apostles plan to use three plutonium cores for a simultaneous nuclear attack on the Vatican, Jerusalem and Mecca, Saudi Arabia. When the weapons go missing, Ethan and his crew find themselves in a desperate race against time to prevent them from falling into the wrong hands.

Review:

Mission Impossible – Fallout is truly a fantastic piece of filmmaking.  Christopher McQuarrie raises the bar even more than he did in the last entry by delivering action set pieces that are beautifully designed and filmed.  Everything about the film is big from its set pieces to its stakes.  The plot is a twisty yet simple story that has our heroes chasing down plutonium.  I wished that the film did a better job of holding its secrets a bit closer to the vest.  Some the twists are fairly obvious but it doesn’t hurt the overall enjoyment of the film as a whole.  At the center of the entire thing is Tom Cruise.  Cruise is a seemingly ageless daredevil who just wants to believe he’s literally some sort of superhero.  Returning cast members Ving Rhames, Simon Pegg, and Rebecca Ferguson aka sexy British Michelle Monaghan all turn in strong supporting turns with each getting their time to shine.  Henry Cavill makes for a solid foil to Cruise but I would have like a bit more subtleness and depth to his character.  Sean Harris returns as the villain from the previous film who is incorporated into the plot that references previous iterations, something refreshing which ultimately make the film more engaging.

MOVIE REVIEW: TEEN TITANS GO! TO THE MOVIES







































It seems that all the major superheroes out there are starring in their own movies -- all but the Teen Titans. Robin is bound and determined to remedy that situation by becoming a star instead of a sidekick. With a few madcap ideas and a song in their hearts, the Teen Titans head to Hollywood to fulfill their dreams. Things soon go awry, however, when a supervillain plans to take over the planet -- putting the very fate of the young heroes on the line.

Review:

Teen Titans Go! To the Movies delivers exactly what you would expect if you were a fan of the Cartoon Network show.  The meta humor is ratcheted up to the nth degree.  DC fans will find themselves in heaven with all the easter eggs and cameos that come up.  The film’s plot is pretty straightforward but it’s consistently funny on multiple levels.  There’s the usual fart jokes that will keep kids giggling but there a lot more advanced and nuanced comedy that most parents will enjoy.  The film does drag a tad in it’s latter half which should come as a big surprise since the shows episode only run 15 minutes long.  Still its great to see Greg Cipes, Scott Menville, Khary Payton, Tara Strong and Hynden Walch voice the Titans on the big screen.  Will Arnett is perfect as Slade the Titans arch nemesis.  Arnett’s voice and comic timing melds perfectly with the shows humor.  Overall it’s an impressive achievement from everyone involved.  Teen Titans Go to the Movies is a film kids will love as well as superhero fans.

Cindy Prascik's Review of Mission Impossible: Fallout







































Dearest Blog: Yesterday it was off to Marquee Cinemas for Mission Impossible: Fallout.
 
Spoiler level here will be mild, nothing you wouldn't know from the trailers.
 
The past comes after Ethan Hunt and his team with a vengeance.
 
Mission Impossible: Fallout has been called the best film in its lengthy franchise, and that's probably a fair, if arguable, assessment. Ridiculously high stakes and and insane stunts make the Fast & Furious movies look like gritty realism by comparison. Fight and chase scenes are expertly choreographed and never dull or repetitive, even if they go on a bit. Tom Cruise--who, as Facebook has pointed out multiple times this week, is older in this MI installment than Wilford Brimley was in Cocoon (!!)--is in top action-hero form, performing his own stunts whenever the insurance allows and carrying the franchise on his back as if he has no other option. The cast is fleshed out with the usual array of familiar and (generally) likable faces: Rebecca Ferguson, Ving Rhames, Henry Cavill's moustache, Angela Bassett, Michelle Monaghan, and Simon Pegg, who is always best thing about any film lucky enough to have him. The brilliant Sean Harris also makes a welcome return as baddie Solomon Lane. Now I shall (reluctantly) mention just a few negatives: While MI: Fallout has a LOT of moving parts, the twists aren't all that clever. They're enjoyable and satisfying, but I made a game of guessing "surprises" before they happened, and I didn't miss the mark even once. There are too many impossibly lucky turns among the chase scenes (a little of that goes a long way), and some "thinking out loud" dialogue that is too silly even for a movie as over-the-top as this. Henry Cavill's wooden delivery, while perfect for a goody-two-shoes like Clark Kent, is jarringly bad for a character that should be at least a little hard to figure out. Finally, even though it doesn't lag, Fallout would have been well served by at least a small trim of its excessive runtime. Not one of those things makes MI: Fallout less than a great movie, but, in the interest of full and fair disclosure, these are what I see as its flaws. Also, since several people have asked, no, you won't be lost if you haven't seen the previous installment (or any previous installments) in the series. The film explains itself more than well enough for even the most casual fan to keep up.
 
Mission Impossible: Fallout clocks in at a whopping 147 minutes and is rated PG13 for "violence and intense sequences of action, and for brief strong language."
 
Easily the most exciting offering of the season, Mission Impossible: Fallout is that rare commodity: a fun summer blockbuster that's also a genuinely fantastic movie. 
 
Of a possible nine Weasleys, Mission Impossible: Fallout gets eight.
