MOVIE REVIEW: BEETLEJUICE BEETLEJUICE

 






















Three generations of the Deetz family return home to Winter River after an unexpected family tragedy. Still haunted by Beetlejuice, Lydia's life soon gets turned upside down when her rebellious teenage daughter discovers a mysterious portal to the afterlife. When someone says Beetlejuice's name three times, the mischievous demon gleefully returns to unleash his very own brand of mayhem.

Review:

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice sporadically recaptures the manic energy from Burton's original but it’s not consistent enough, thanks to an overstuffed story, to really deliver the way it should.  Tim Burton does manage to rediscover his gleefully macabre, cartoonish visuals that made him a name in the 80's and 90's.  The film works best when it’s playing in the afterlife with its exaggerated color schemes and wonderfully twisted character designs.  He's clearly having a ball revisiting this particular playground, but he adds some new wrinkles to mix such like a sequence using claymation and a subtitled, Ed Wood inspired flashback.   Those moments when Burton really leans into the weirdness work so well that you wish that he'd done it more throughout the film.  That's not to say that the rest of the film won't have fans grinning even if some of the jokes don't quite land the way they should.  Michael Keaton, Winona Ryder and Catherine O'Hara easily jumping back into their characters make it easier to navigate some of the film's dead spots.  They are able to recapture the essence of the original characters without missing a beat, which is great fun to see onscreen.  Ryder serves the film's north star doing some strong subtle work as the middle aged Lydia.  Catherine O'Hara is the film's bright spot in the opening act as the film pops to life as soon as she appears onscreen.   Keaton's voice is noticeably deeper and he's not bouncing around with the same chaotic energy he brought to the role in the original but he's still able to channel that mischievousness that made the character so memorable.  Newcomers, Justin Theroux, Monica Bellucci, Jenna Ortega and Willem Dafoe are solid with some leaving a bigger impression than others.  The ageless Monica Bellucci looks wonderful as an undead, soul sucking frankenstein but the film gives her woefully little to do.  Willem Dafoe is given a bit more rope and he has a ball chewing up scenery as deceased actor turn detective.  The film would have been better off giving those two more screentime as opposed to Ortega and Theroux's characters who are uninteresting and flat for the majority of the time.  The overload of subplots saps so much energy and momentum from the film that you're left wishing they had focused on the story more and kept it more straightforward.  The film works better in its second half once it becomes more focused with some threads being closed off rather quickly which gives Lydia and Beetlejuice more of a spotlight.  A quick throwaway line handles the absence of the Maitland's while Jeffery Jones' character death sets off the entire plot which allows for some clever methods to have him be a presence without the actual actor.  If there was a film that's perfectly suited to deal with the exclusion of an actor who'd run afoul of the law, its definitely this one as they easily weave it into the story's vibe.  It’s a testament to the cast and crew that they are able to recapture the original's vibe so succinctly in Beetlejuice Beetlejuice even if the story doesn't land the way the original did.

MOVIE REVIEW: KINDS OF KINDNESS























Three stories revolve around a man who tries to take control of his own life, a policeman whose wife seems like a different person, and a woman who searches for someone with a special ability.

Review:

Yorgos Lanthimos' Kinds of Kindness isn't going to be for everybody with the anthology's trio of twisted tales dissecting a series of overarching themes such as obsession, self actualization, amongst others, with pitch black humor and a bleak worldview.  There's a fairly transparent sense that the cast and crew are well aware they aren't making something for general consumption as the stories veer into decidedly weird areas occasionally done for simple shock value with others presenting something more substantial to the proceedings.  Each segment sets ups a very specific story but the script only provides some scant, basic details to get the audience acclimated to the plots and characters but very little outside detail beyond that.  The abrupt endings give the film a whole disorienting feel throughout as you're given little to no time to digest what you've seen before moving to the next one.  The stories leave plenty of unexplained plot points which are sure to frustrate plenty of people.   At the very least, the film manages to burrow itself into the audience's mind as the cast and crew gives them plenty of leeway to make their own determination about what each section represents.  The core ensemble made up of Jesse Plemons, Emma Stone, Willem Dafoe, Margaret Qualley, Hong Chau and Mamoudou Athie are clearly committed to Lanthimos's vision throughout.  Plemons gets the lion’s share of the screen time across all three segments delivering strong work in each as he showcases his versatility.  Emma Stone gets bigger spotlights in the second and third segments with Willem Dafoe, Margaret Qualley & Hong Chau mostly serving as supporting players across all three.  The group works well together but really is most effective in the middle segment where the performances and oddity of it all coalesces into the film's most effective moments.  Ultimately, Kinds of Kindness is a niche film that could be dissected as easily as its exalted depending on personal taste.

MOVIE REVIEW: POOR THINGS

 






















Brought back to life by an unorthodox scientist, a young woman runs off with a lawyer on a whirlwind adventure across the continents. Free from the prejudices of her times, she grows steadfast in her purpose to stand for equality and liberation.

Yorgos Lanthimos' Frankenstein-like fable, Poor Things, is a darkly comedic and bold exploration of self-discovery of oneself.  Its a fascinating journey with a distinctive style and feel that permeates the film from its opening act, shot in black and white, before the world and color palate of the film opens up with great effect.  Lanthimos' approach is aggressive but self assured as a bevy of themes and concepts that range from the grotesque, to the perverse and philosophical are thrown at the screen in steady succession.  Its a fearless approach that unafraid of losing portions of the audience along the way.  The film and story is held together and propelled by Emma Stone's central turn as Bella Baxter.  Stone's performance carries the film as she makes her character's journey believable and organic with an effortless ease as we see the character move from innate, instinctive, impulses into a fully defined persona. She has an impressive ability to make every step of journey feel authentic all the while never losing her comedic timing during some of the film's more insane and absurd moments.  If not for Stone's fearless turn, Mark Ruffalo could have easily stolen the entire film from a lesser actress.  Ruffalo's turn as the swarmy and nefarious lawyer is a true testament to his talent as actor.  Ruffalo works against his nice guy type to deliver an overconfident lothario who quickly loses control of Baxter before being ultimately ruined financially and emotionally by her.  Ruffalo and Stone work off each incredibly well which really gives the film an almost manic and vibrant energy it never manages to recapture in the back half of the film.  There's a definite sense that film starts to lose a bit of  steam in the final act which drags here and there which would have been helped with some judicious edits.  Willem Dafoe, Ramy Youssef and Jerrod Carmichael round out the cast with each turning in subtly effective performances in limited screen time.  Much like one of Dr. Godwin Baxter's experiments, Poor Things, is a fascinating amalgam of ideas and concepts that results in something singular and distinctive.

MOVIE REVIEW: INSIDE

Vasilis Katsoupis’s Inside is a claustrophobic concept film that tests the central character and audience resiliency as the film moves into more abstract territory.  Katsoupis’s film possesses a steady rhythm that he maintains for better or worse throughout the film’s runtime.  It’s the type of film that’s more than happy to keep things vague and open to interpretation which allows for multiple interpretations of what we are seeing onscreen and whether it’s entirely literal and something more philosophical.  As such, Inside is destined to frustrate a large swath of movie goers who might have expected something a bit more immediate and intense.  Willem Dafoe is tasked with carrying the film armed with a script that’s light on characterization instead choosing to focus almost exclusively on the character’s survival response.  Dafoe weather worn face and gaunt frame works well for the roles especially as the story moves into its latter stages.  It’s a multifaceted performance that’s rather nuanced and measured which is impressive for multiple reasons especially since he’s alone for the better part of the film.  His performance echoes other turns like Tom Hanks in Cast Away, Ryan Reynolds in Buried or James Franco in 127 Hours which test the actors and audience’s endurance.

MOVIE REVIEW: THE NORTHMAN


 






















Prince Amleth is on the verge of becoming a man when his father is brutally murdered by his uncle, who kidnaps the boy's mother. Two decades later, Amleth is now a Viking who raids Slavic villages. He soon meets a seeress who reminds him of his vow -- save his mother, kill his uncle, avenge his father.

Review:

The Northman is a visually striking, blood soaked, revenge epic that's sure to leave an impression long after the film's finished.  Robert Eggers most expensive film to date is also his most accessible with a straightforward Viking Hamlet tome that still allows him to engage in his signature folklore flourishes.  Eggers peppers his film with paganistic mythology which pairs perfectly with the imposing Irish vistas subbing in for Iceland.  There's a brutishly beautiful tone set from the start and maintained for the duration which plays like a grimier Gladiator with sprinkles of Clash of the Titans and Excalibur.  Alexander Skarsgård is a hulking mass of revenge whose intensity screams through the screen the moment he appears.  Its not necessarily a challenging role since there's not much depth to his character, none of the characters in the film are, but Skarsgård still makes for a imposing and engaging figure.  Anya Taylor-Joy channels a more mature version of her character from The Witch which makes for a fascinating turn even if her and Skarsgård don't share much onscreen chemistry.  Ethan Hawke, Björk and Willem Dafoe have small supporting turns which adds texture to the film.  Nicole Kidman also has a small but pivotal role that gives her a scene that allows to flex her incredible talent.  The Northman may not have the thematic depth and reach of Robert Eggers first two films but that doesn't make it anymore impactful memorable due in large part to his creative vision.

MOVIE REVIEW: NIGHTMARE ALLEY

 





















In 1940s New York, down-on-his-luck Stanton Carlisle endears himself to a clairvoyant and her mentalist husband at a traveling carnival. Using newly acquired knowledge, Carlisle crafts a golden ticket to success by swindling the elite and wealthy. Hoping for a big score, he soon hatches a scheme to con a dangerous tycoon with help from a mysterious psychiatrist who might be his most formidable opponent yet.

Review:

Guillermo del Toro's Nightmare Alley is a lavishly directed film noir morality tale that's as engrossing as it is engaging.  Del Toro channel's plenty of classic noir films in this remake of the 1947 original while adding his own personal twist.  The visually lean heavily on art deco designs with tinges of the macabre which fits with Del Toro's style.  Bradley Cooper is at the center of the film and does impressively well as the charlatan who drives the film.  Cooper's performance transforms as the character evolves over the course of the film's runtime with broad and occasionally more subtle choices.  It's a fascinating performance that blooms as the film moves on.  Willem Dafoe, Toni Collette and David Strathairn carry the majority of the supporting load in the first half of the film with each leaving a strong impression before the scene shifts.  The second half though belongs to Cate Blanchett who's the defacto femme fatale of the piece.  Blanchett's angelic yet menacing face fits the role perfectly as she delivers lines with steely precision and intensity.  This film is an actor's playground which makes its leisurely pacing easier to digest as you appreciate the performances on display.  Nightmare Alley isn't going to be everyone's cup of tea but for those who can appreciate meticulous filmmaking with top notch performances will find plenty to love here.

MOVIE REVIEW: SPIDER-MAN: NO WAY HOME

 




















With Spider-Man's identity now revealed, our friendly neighborhood web-slinger is unmasked and no longer able to separate his normal life as Peter Parker from the high stakes of being a superhero. When Peter asks for help from Doctor Strange, the stakes become even more dangerous, forcing him to discover what it truly means to be Spider-Man.

Review:

Spider-Man: No Way Home is a crowd pleasing trilogy capper for Tom Holland's run as the webslinger.  Jon Watts film is initially chaotic and contrived as he tries to set the table for the plot.  Once the film gets moving in earnest Watts and Holland start hitting that sweet spot with the latter bringing that youthful optimism and naivety to Parker that fits the character perfectly.  Plot threads from there on out become difficult to discuss without spoiling the fan service that's doled out in copious amounts in the film's last two acts.  There's a significant story at play in the background which deals with the characters legacy and future at the same time.  It's a hefty bit of character work and Tom Holland delivers one of his best performances in the role.  His turn here is more nuanced and layered than his previous takes and the film is the better for it.  Zendaya and Jacob Batalon return as Parker's girlfriend and best friend with the script not asking much from them other than playing it light and moving the story along as needed.  Jon Favreau and Marisa Tomei are in a same boat but Tomei does get a moment to really shine for the first time in this series.  Willem Dafoe, Jamie Foxx, Alfred Molina, Thomas Haden Church and Rhys Ifans return to the Spider-Man universe with varying degrees of effectiveness.  Molina who gets the most screen time early on does an impressive job of channeling his original performance.  Willem Dafoe is equally impressive bring back his Green Goblin and even builds on it as the story moves along which is sure to leave an impression.  On the opposite end of the spectrum is Jamie Foxx who decides to ham it up every time he's on screen to a distracting degree.  A minor hiccup considering the amount of effort employed to get all these characters on screen at once.  Spider-Man: No Way Home manages to balance all these story threads while zeroing in the character's heart in the finale.  That being said, it's not perfect since there's a tangible sense that the film could have been streamlined and trimmed by at least a half an hour.  It's also easy to forget that the kicking off point of the entire story is incredibly contrived and nonsensical.  Ultimately, long term fans probably won't care by the time the film ends since it ultimately delivers on multiple levels

Cindy Prascik's Review of The Last Thing He Wanted








































This weekend the never-ending Quest for Quality Home Viewing lead me to a Netflix nugget called the Last Thing He Wanted. While the Last Thing He Wanted boasts a hilariously discouraging five (5) percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes, it stars Oscar winners Ben Affleck and Anne Hathaway, both of whom I adore. How bad could it be? Well...

Spoiler level here will be mild-ish.

Hathaway portrays Elena McMahon, a journalist who, thanks to her no-good father, gets mixed up in her own story about Central American arms dealing.

The Last Thing He Wanted has many moving pieces. SO many moving pieces. Rather than shifting them craftily around a chess-board of a film, the movie throws them in the air a-la 52 Pickup. I'm not sure they all come down. Players move in and out of frame — revealing and concealing motives — as the picture's various paths attempt to converge on one cohesive road. Hathaway does a good job in the lead. Some of her dialogue is clunky, but she's a bit of a bright spot in a movie that has few enough. A weirdly-shiny Affleck "enjoys" less screen time, and certainly does less with it. His character is pretty obvious, so most or even all of that may not be his fault. The picture boasts an impressive list of supporting talent, including Willem Dafoe, Rosie Perez, Edi Gathegi, and the always wonderful Toby Jones. As terrifying as McMahon's trip down the rabbit hole is, the Last Thing He Wanted never sustains much tension, as most of the characters prove to be exactly what you suspect they are from the first time you see them. A political thriller like this obviously features its share of violence, and one particularly disturbing scene will bother me long after I've forgotten the rest. I am here to warn you, this movie offers you nothing that's worth having this image in your head forever. Having said ALL of that, I didn't hate the Last Thing He Wanted. I didn't hate it right up to the last minute...when it did exactly what I knew it was going to do from the first minute. Then I hated it.

The Last Thing He Wanted runs 115 minutes and is rated R for "language, some violence, disturbing images, and brief nudity."

At risk of stealing a phrase I feel certain already must have been used to describe this movie, the Last Thing He Wanted truly is the last thing any of us wanted. (But Anne and Ben, I still love you and will always watch whatever you do!) Of a possible nine Weasleys, the Last Thing He Wanted gets two.

MOVIE REVIEW: AQUAMAN








































Once home to the most advanced civilization on Earth, the city of Atlantis is now an underwater kingdom ruled by the power-hungry King Orm. With a vast army at his disposal, Orm plans to conquer the remaining oceanic people -- and then the surface world. Standing in his way is Aquaman, Orm's half-human, half-Atlantean brother and true heir to the throne. With help from royal counselor Vulko, Aquaman must retrieve the legendary Trident of Atlan and embrace his destiny as protector of the deep.

Review:

Aquaman is one of those properties that could have gone off the rails fairly easily much like Marvel’s Thor.  The best thing DC did was nail the casting much like they did with Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman.  Jason Momoa has great screen presence and he never takes himself overly serious.  He’s had a trial run with him making an impressive debut in Justice League and he proves that he’s more than capable of carrying his own film here.  The combination of James Wan and Jason Momoa make for an incredibly fun film which has a massive scope but it never loses its focus even as it becomes more and more ridiculous.  Wan does a healthy bit of world building delivering some incredibly impressive visual set pieces and action sequences.  After a bit of a slow start the film revs up and never let’s down, its energy is palpable through out even at nearly two in half hours.  The supporting cast rounds out the film with Amber Heard leaving the biggest impression with Nichole Kidman coming in a strong second.  It’s a testament to how well crafted the film is that you can overlook a few missteps like a bland villain, Black Manta would have worked better as the primary baddie, and some formulaic story beats.  Even so Aquaman is a superhero film that’s sure to please nearly everyone especially long suffering DC fans.

Review:

Murder on the Orient Express is a solid and lavishly directed throwback murder mystery.  Kenneth Branagh, lover of all things classical, directs his film with a steady hand, keeping everything visually stimulating even during some of the slower portions.  Branagh does fine work pulling double duty as Hercule Poirot, one of Agatha Christie’s most beloved characters.  It’s an interesting iteration of the character that captures his quirks and mannerisms while infusing him with a tinge of sadness.  Branagh is front and center for the majority of the film but the impressive ensemble is given plenty of time to shine with Michelle Pfeiffer and Daisy Ridley leaving the biggest impression.  The central mystery, which is over 80 years old, isn’t terribly complex and fairly common knowledge so there is a lack of urgency to the whole thing. Kenneth Branagh clearly loves the material and it comes through on screen but I’m not sure if people will be rushing to revisit it after the initial viewing.

Cindy Prascik's Review of Murder on the Orient Express







































Dearest Blog: Yesterday it was off to Marquee Cinemas for the much-anticipated remake of Murder on the Orient Express.
Spoiler level here will be mild, on the off chance there's a living soul who doesn't know how this one plays out.
A murder on a derailed train leaves a carload of suspects stranded with the world's greatest detective.
2017's Murder on the Orient Express isn't likely to match its 1974 counterpart in the hearts of critics and fans, and is even less likely to match Thor: Ragnarok at the box office. It seems to exist in a weird little comfort zone of middling expectations, but a much-loved story combined with an extraordinary cast made it a must-see for me, and it did not disappoint.
I simply love the way this movie was filmed. At every turn there is a gorgeous panoramic view or a perfect angle on a face or a table setting or a train car that reminds me how great a movie can be just for being a movie. Much like The Revenant, I could have gazed upon its beauty for hours even if I despised the rest of it, which I most certainly did not. The film sets a light tone to start, earning some laughs while familiarizing viewers with the great Poirot's talents and idiosyncrasies, then things go progressively darker as the unfortunate events play out. Kenneth Branagh's moustache game is as on point as his portrayal of the iconic detective. I am faithfully married to David Suchet's Poirot, and was quite surprised to find I wasn't making unfavorable comparisons in my head over the course of the movie. As a die-hard Depp-a-Holic, I am delighted to see Johnny in a decent film where he doesn't play the weird guy with the funny hat. Neither the story nor the size of the ensemble allows him as much screen time as I'd like, but this role is a friendly reminder of those details to which Depp tends better than anyone else: accents and small mannerisms that really make a character. May his career swing ever further back in this direction towards a long-deserved Oscar. The supporting cast is solid, with no one outside of Branagh really getting enough face time to delight or offend. Lovely costumes and a luscious score by Patrick Doyle are the perfect accents to this old-school mystery. Orient Express is a tale that doesn't keep its secrets especially well, but it moves at a good clip and doesn't suffer much for the fact that you'll probably guess the outcome, even in the unlikely event you didn't already know it. A ghastly musical number called "Never Forget," showcasing the dubious vocal talents of Michelle Pfeiffer, nearly made me forget how much I liked the movie when it crashed the end-credits, but fortunately I recovered before I had to start writing this review.
Murder on the Orient Express clocks in at an efficient 114 minutes and is rated PG13 for "violence and thematic elements."
It may not match the brilliance of the 1974 classic, but 2017's Murder on the Orient Express mixes an iconic tale with an extraordinary cast to create an enjoyable bit of cinema. 
Of a possible nine Weasleys, Murder on the Orient Express gets seven and a half.

Dear reader(s): Thanks to a painful trailer, my best hope for The Great Wall was that it would be hilariously bad and not just bad. I am pleased to report that, while it's not winning any awards anytime soon, The Great Wall IS actually a pretty enjoyable way to pass a couple hours.
 
Liberally seasoned from the cliche jar, the Great Wall is deeply, deeply idiotic. Jarringly modern phrasing and Matt Damon's weirdly stilted diction are no help with the clunky script. The most pointed attempts at humor often miss the mark, but a light tone works strongly in the movie's favor. The Great Wall boasts some lovely scenery, spectacular costumes, excellent precision battle choreography, and solid creature effects. I didn't see the movie in 3D, but there are a few dizzying scenes that I expect would make it worth the upcharge and glasses headache. Wall-to-wall (see what I did there?) action never comes at the story's expense, and is perfectly accompanied by Ramin Djawadi's rousing score.
 
The Great Wall clocks in at 103 minutes and is rated PG13 for "sequences of fantasy action violence."
 
The story and the acting are nothing to write home about, but The Great Wall is a fun outing that's more than worth seeing on the big screen for it's extraordinary production values. Of a possible nine Weasleys, The Great Wall gets five.

Cindy Prascik's Reviews of The Book of Life & John Wick



Dearest Blog, yesterday I talked myself into a double bill for which I had zero enthusiasm: The Book of Life and John Wick. Hoping for at least one pleasant surprise, off to the cinema I went.

Spoiler level here will be mild, nothing you wouldn't know from the trailers.

First on my agenda was the animated feature The Book of Life.

Torn between his own dreams and his family's expectations, a young man fights for the woman he loves...in the worlds of the living and of the dead.

Dear reader(s), I was pretty excited at the prospect of an animated movie based on the Day of the Dead, anticipating a fascinating tale told with beautiful art. Then I saw a trailer and...um...okay, sometimes a ho-hum trailer isn't really a fair indicator of a movie's quality, right? Unfortunately...
The Book of Life represents one of the worst afternoons I've ever spent at the movies. I can't remember the last time I was this bored with a picture, and if I hoped the art and animation might compensate for some of the story's flaws, well, I hoped in vain. I'm not saying the movie doesn't have some beautiful illustrations and eye-popping colors, but, for the most part, it's sub-par and even ugly at times (specifically, characters with long, warty noses...what's up with that??).

The notable exceptions are the characters who rule over the Lands of the Remembered and the Forgotten, La Muerte and Xibalba, both of which are stunning. The leading voice talent--Diego Luna, Channing Tatum, and Zoe Saldana--all mail it in, none seemingly having even the slightest interest in the proceedings. The alleged humor is puerile and flat, I don't think I laughed even once.

In the interest of full and fair disclosure, I'll admit my experience was not at all enhanced by the mother sitting next to me who texted for the literally the entire movie, and another behind me who allowed her small child to cry and talk loudly throughout, apparently never considering that taking him outside would be more appropriate than letting him ruin the movie for everyone else.

Still, I was bored enough to know I wouldn't have liked this much better even if I'd had the place to myself.

The Book of Life runs the longest 95 minutes ever, and is rated PG for "mild action, rude humor, some thematic elements, and brief scary images." (For my money, the imagery alone is entirely too scary for smaller children.)

Of a possible nine Weasleys, The Book of Life gets one.

If you're looking for some quality seasonal animation to share with your children, please go out and grab a copy of It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown! or The Nightmare Before Christmas instead.

Next on the docket was John Wick.

Keanu Reeves stars as a former hitman who comes out of retirement to take revenge on those who took what was most precious to him.

Since the John Wick trailer divulges that the baddies kill Wick's dog, a final gift from his deceased wife, that is not a spoiler for purposes of this review.

It does, however, break my cardinal rule of movies and TV, which is: kill all the humans you want, but leave the dog alone. The movie doesn't linger on the event itself, and it is the catalyst for basically everything else that happens, so I'll have to give the filmmakers a reluctant pass on this one.

John Wick is the pleasant surprise for which I'd hoped yesterday, a fun actioner that is smart enough to know what it is and to not wear out its welcome.

Keanu Reeves is, as always, an engaging lead. Nevermind he's kind of a terrible actor, I love him in everything and someone else must too, given the fact that he continues to find regular work. Williem Dafoe has a terrific supporting turn as one of Wick's old business acquaintances, and the movie is so much the better for a brief appearance by the magnificent Ian McShane.

The rest of the supporting cast is a veritable who's who of "that guy who was in that thing"--oh, hey, Mayhem and Sammy Winchester's girlfriend and Theon Greyjoy!!

The action is strong and bloody and thoroughly entertaining. Fast cars and big shoot-em-ups keep the film moving at a slick pace, never leaving the viewer too much time to consider how baddies always wait their turn when they outnumber the hero in hand-to-hand combat. John Wick has all the striking visuals I was looking for in The Book of Life--MAJOR kudos for cinematography, production design, and art direction--and a super score that sets a perfect tone every step of the way.

John Wick is rated R for "strong and bloody violence throughout, language and brief drug use."
It may not have been one of the more anticipated titles of 2014, but John Wick is definitely one of the most pleasant surprises. Of a possible nine Weasleys, John Wick gets six and a half.

Review:

John Wick is a movie we’ve all seen countless times before.  The plot is paper thin, the characters are one dimensional and the story never surprises you.  So why is this movie so much fun?  Keanu Reeves is a stoic man of action who carries the film through some of the dead spots and excels in the awesome action sequences.  Those action sequences are wonderfully choreographed ballets of mayhem, reminiscent of classic Hong Kong shoot em ups.   Additionally, the film has a wonderful sense of humor.  Regardless of the body count, it never takes it’s self overly serious.  It’s the perfect kind of B movie that easily digestible and never loses track of what it’s there to do.

[Trailer] John Carter of Mars

I have to admit I know very little about the Edgar Rice Burroughs’ series this is based on, so this trailer for the new film is a tad confusing.

That being said it does kind of peak my interest with it’s epic scope, and fine production values, so it'll probably be something right up my ally.

Review:

Daybreakers has interesting conceit, if slightly derivative think the vampire world seen in the first Blade, from the start but it mostly abandons most of the more interesting aspects of the story for a splatter fest finale. Writer/director the Spierig brother, who had a much more successful splatter fest with their break through film Undead, have some interesting ideas and could have made for some heady vampire theme story telling. About halfway through the film it seems like they have a change of heart and move the film in a different direction amping up the FX, which are fun and impressive, and action. It’s a real shame because a lot of ideas could have been very fertile grounds for imaginative heady type of film. As the film trots towards the final act it plays it safe and things all work out as expected. The cast is mostly game throughout the film with Ethan Hawke leading the way as the dour and conflicted hematologist looking for blood substitute. He tries valiantly to make his character interesting and engaging but mostly he’s just kind of a bore. Willem Dafoe and his natural creepiness work well here but his character is kind of a carbon copy of James Woods in John Carpenter’s Vampires with a few added quirks to make him more interesting. Sam Neill, like the film itself, starts off interesting hinting at some complexity to his character but degenerates into a clichéd capitalistic villain but with fangs. Slow mo dismemberments and blood flinging finishes off the film which would be just fine if it didn’t start off with so much promise.
