MOVIE REVIEW: BLACK ADAM

 


In ancient Kahndaq, Teth Adam was bestowed the almighty powers of the gods. After using these powers for vengeance, he was imprisoned, becoming Black Adam. Nearly 5,000 years have passed, and Black Adam has gone from man to myth to legend. Now free, his unique form of justice, born out of rage, is challenged by modern-day heroes who form the Justice Society: Hawkman, Dr. Fate, Atom Smasher and Cyclone.

Review:

Black Adam joins the cinematic superhero genre with a highly caffeinated overly produced adventure that moves at a dizzying pace at times to its own detriments.  Jaume Collet-Serra delivers a kinetic, action heavy film that pulls a large bit of visual inspiration from Zach Synder's films.  There are hero shots a plenty and an overreliance on slow motion that feels passé at this point which ultimately distracts more than enhance the experience.  Collet-Serra may be in the director's seat, but this project has been Dwayne Johnson passion project which took years to finally come to fruition, needless to say his finger prints are all over the final product.  This is Johnson's film for better or worse and the bizarre thing is that the character the polar opposite of what he typically does best onscreen.  Gone is his usual charisma, replaced by a stern faced scowl and wooden line delivery that rarely feels authentic.  The character's scripting doesn't help much by giving him a kid to play off of which feels like a cheap imitation of the Terminator 2 relationship.  It’s a shame since you get distinct feeling that there's more depth to the character's story than what ends up on screen.  The same holds true for the supporting characters but the actors are able to make them far more interesting than the script does.  Pierce Brosnan and Aldis Hodge in particular deliver interesting turns as a superhero nearing the end of his journey and an alpha male who sees morality in black or white.  Noah Centineo is fun as the film's comic relief but Quintessa Swindell given woefully little to do.  The script drops a few bits and pieces about these character's background and story, but it never explores them. The film is always in a hurry to move to the next action set piece and while those are fun it would have benefited from slowing down for a moment and letting the characters shine.  Black Adam ends up being glossy mindless fun especially if you are a fan of DC properties with the biggest moment coming in the post credit scene.

MOVIE REVIEW: EUROVISION SONG CONTEST: THE STORY OF FIRE SAGA

Review:

There are a few things that’ll make you much more disposed to enjoying Will Ferrell’s latest farce.  If you’re a fan of Ferrell’s man child shtick and euro pop music you’ll probably find plenty to love in loving send up of the famed singing contest.  The film radiates some strong Zoolander vibes from the start even if it never quite reaches that film’s heights.  It’s a zany vibe from the start and director David Dobkin embraces the silliness which includes things like elves and a charred protector ghost and those aren’t even major story threads.  Unfortunately the film could have used some trimming here and there; it appears to be an issue with Netflix produced films all around.  There’s zero reason this type of film should be 2 hours long and while it only drag in spots it would have benefited from some savvy edits.  As is the film have some really funny portion like an after party that turns into a Eurovision cameo fest and central performance that goes horribly wrong.  Ferrell and McAdams make for a fun duo and both work off each other really well.  This film is right in Ferrell’s wheelhouse so it’s hardly a surprise but McAdams continues to show off some impressive comedic talents which is kind of hard to believe considering her early rom-com film roles.   Both are obviously have a great time but Dan Stevens nearly steals the show as their friendememy.  Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Sage is kind of escapism lark you need occasionally especially during particular time in history.  It doesn’t bring much new to the table but its funny enough to make for an enjoyable watch.

MOVIE REVIEW: MAMMA MIA! HERE WE GO AGAIN







































In 1979 young Donna, Tanya and Rosie graduate from Oxford University -- leaving Donna free to embark on a series of adventures throughout Europe. On her journeys, she makes the acquaintances of Harry, Bill and Sam -- the latter whom she falls in love with, but he's also the man who breaks her heart. In the present day, Donna's pregnant daughter, Sophie, dreams of renovating a taverna while reuniting with her mother's old friends and boyfriends on the Greek island of Kalokairi.

Review:

Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again is a surprisingly strong sequel to the fizzy original.  Getting the bad out of the way, the film feels the loss of it’s A List cast from the original, the majority of them appear but with limited screen time.  Lily James carries the majority of film as the young Donna and she’s more than capable.  I do wonder if they asked Grace Gummer, one of Streep’s daughters, to play the role since she bears such a striking resemblance to her when she was younger.  Still Lily James pulls off an impressive performance, capturing most of Streep’s mannerisms from the original film.  The rest of the younger cast is equally as effective portraying their older, legendary counterparts.  The song selections here aren’t as strong as the original film which is understandable since the original used nearly all the greatest hits.  Still they are catchy enough to keep any ABBA fan smiling.  The strangest thing about Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again is how reflective and heartfelt the film is.  It’s far more emotional than you’d expect from a sequel to a light fizzy original.  Meryl Streep appears in what is an extended cameo but her appearance packs an emotional punch and really brings the film full circle.

Cindy Prascik's Reviews of The Foreigner & Professor Marston and the Wonder Women








Dearest Blog: Yesterday it was off to Marquee Cinemas for a double-bill of The Foreigner and Professor Marston and the Wonder Women.

Spoiler level here will be mild, nothing you wouldn't know from the trailers.

First on the docket: Jackie Chan seeks revenge in The Foreigner.

A grieving father goes after the individuals responsible for a terrorist bombing that claimed the life of his young daughter.

The Foreigner is one of those movies that feels like it should be much more entertaining than it is. A solid if oft-told story, the picture boasts a well-loved lead and a suspenseful plot, with fierce action sequences that will set you on the edge of your seat. Sadly, all of the above is weighed down by a plodding tempo that makes the movie seem much longer than it is. Jackie Chan is solid in the lead, but the film gives you at least its first half to ponder how this humble restaurant owner got such...erm...Jackie Chan-like skills, with no real payout for your wait; the answer is exactly what you'll know it was going to be if you've ever watched an action/revenge movie before. When everything hits the fan, Pierce Brosnan is perfect as the blustering minister who WON'T HAVE IT!!...but where was he going with that accent? The convoluted plot would feel almost comical at times if not for Chan wearing his very best Emmett Kelly face for the duration; in fact, I think I really might have hated this one but for how much sympathy he earned for his character.

The Foreigner runs 114 minutes and is rated R for "violence, language, and some sexual material."

The Foreigner earns a half-Weasley bonus for (briefly) featuring Harry Potter's Cho Chang, Katie Leung, but gets a full demerit for getting Hot Blooded into my head.

Of a possible nine Weasleys, The Foreigner gets four and a half.

Next up: Professor Marston and the Wonder Women.

The relationships among a psychologist, his wife, and a student give birth to our most beloved female superhero.

Well, dear reader(s), it feels like quite the privilege to be a girl writing in a time when I get to ask which is the better of this year's two Wonder Woman films. I mean, the answer is unequivocally "the other one," but still...

Professor Marston and the Wonder Women has all the pieces of a great story, so--especially riding 2017's wave of Wonder Woman mania--it should have been a can't-miss. Unfortunately, it goes foul by sensationalizing the sexual aspects of the story, resulting in an uncomfortable and unsatisfying finished product.

Wonder Women's chief positives are in its leads; Luke Evans and especially Rebecca Hall are terrific. Bella Heathcote is a bit of a weak link, and prominent enough that you'll feel it at every turn, but two out of three isn't so bad, I guess. The film has some genuinely touching moments as well as some funny ones, and it's told in such a way that it keeps moving even when there's not a lot to tell.

Ultimately, though, WW is just too lurid in its presentation to be taken seriously. When a roomful of adults is overcome by the giggles at every erotic turn, that's a sure-fire sign that, as the Internet is so fond of saying: "You're doing it wrong." Wonder Women sincerely attempts to sell its titular family as "normal," but does so with so little finesse that it only comes across as tawdry, even to someone (like myself) who wouldn't normally bat an eye. Amusingly, the movie even takes a stab at explaining Wonder Woman's skimpy costume, but--just a year removed from Batman v. Superman (where you can bet it wasn't Batman or Superman who featured in a gratuitous crotch shot)--it rings pretty hollow.

Professor Marston and the Wonder Women clocks in at 108 minutes and is rated R for "strong sexual content, including brief graphic images, and language."

Sadly, Professor Marston and the Wonder Women is a coulda-shoulda-mighta been great picture that falls well short of even memorable.

Of a possible nine Weasleys, Professor Marston and the Wonder Women gets four.

MOVIE REVIEW: NO ESCAPE







































An intense international thriller, NO ESCAPE centers on an American businessman (Wilson) as he and his family settle into their new home in Southeast Asia. Suddenly finding themselves in the middle of a violent political uprising, they must frantically look for a safe escape as rebels mercilessly attack the city. Directed by John Erick Dowdle and written together with his brother Drew, NO ESCAPE stars Owen Wilson, Pierce Brosnan and Lake Bell.

Review:

John E. Dowdle’s No Escape feels like a mash up of The Purge: Anarchy, The Warrior and Hostel.  It’s a tense mess of a film that really hits all the worse clichés of the dangers abroad genre.  Dowdle’s direction is fairly strong as he ratchets up the tension to insane levels particularly during the first half of the film.  Sadly, there’s little to no characterization of any of the characters and only the thinnest and cheapest of explanation about the coup that sets off the action.  Pierce Brosnan appears disappears, reappears and disappears for good from the movie remaining the most interesting character in the whole production.   Owen Wilson and Lake Bell deliver solid work hitting all the panicked notes you can think of.  They’re continually frazzled and on edge but seemingly have time for some family discussions regardless of whatever is going on.  There’s logical plot holes left and right even as the film beats its message over your head with it literally spelled out for you.  And then, just like that, it’s over since the escape route was conveniently close and far enough to keep the film rolling.

Cindy Prascik's Review of The November Man








































Dearest Blog, thanks to an early dismissal by my generous employer, I was able to get out to the movies yesterday afternoon. On my agenda, Pierce Brosnan's poor man's Bond, The November Man.

A retired CIA operative returns to action and finds himself pitted against his former pupil.

Well, dear reader(s), I think The November Man may be the most unbelievable movie I've seen all summer, and that includes the one with the gun-toting raccoon. Comparisons to the Bond franchise are inevitable, especially with Brosnan in the lead, but, for me, there's always a wink-wink, nudge-nudge aspect to James Bond movies. Sure...the guy is impossibly slick and has impossibly advanced tools and impossibly beautiful women, and gets himself into and out of impossibly impossible situations, but the movies seem self-aware. This one could have used a bit of self awareness, but that's not to say I didn't enjoy it.

Brosnan is still quite the dashing heartthrob. He's 61 now, so of course Hollywood has to offer some young meat in the form of one Luke Bracey, of whom I'd never heard until a trailer for The Best of Me ran immediately prior to November Man. I'd no more than thought, "Bet that dude is cornering the market on 'hot guy' roles," and...viola! Brosnan and Bracey have zero chemistry onscreen, and I wasn't buying the years of history between them for one minute. (Note: I mean "chemistry" in a non-romantic sense, although they don't make a very nice couple, either. I'd rather Pierce Brosnan and Andrew Garfield, myself.) Brosnan fares better with female lead Olga Kurylenko, but only just.

Mostly I think the writing is so flat that there's not much any actors could have done with it, but, again...that's not to say I didn't enjoy it.

The November Man is action packed, and no tip-toeing around trying to secure a PG13 rating either.

The series of events that keeps this movie going is about as remarkable as Gravity (a.k.a. "Murphy's Law"), but the movie is fun and not overlong, so it's not hard to forgive its other shortcomings.

The November Man runs 108 minutes and is rated R for "strong violence including a sexual assault, language, sexuality/nudity, and brief drug use." It's not a movie that'll change your life or that you'll remember forever, but for a late-August holiday weekend...eh...I'm alright with that.

Of a possible nine Weasleys, The November Man gets six.
