MOVIE REVIEW: ELIO

 






















Elio, an underdog with an active imagination, finds himself inadvertently beamed up to the Communiverse, an interplanetary organization with representatives from galaxies far and wide. Mistakenly identified as Earth's ambassador to the rest of the universe, he starts to form new bonds with eccentric aliens while discovering who he's truly meant to be.

Review:

Elio, Pixar's latest animated feature, brings a breath of fresh air with is original story and colorful characters while still managing to center itself around an emotional core.  The trio of directors, Adrian Molina, Domee Shi and Madeline Sharafian, deliver a lively sci-fi tale that's fun and easy to enjoy.  The character designs are inventive and wonderfully crafted especially once the action moves into the Communiverse.  They manage to keep a steady pace with the action which keeps the plot moving, something that both parents and children alike will appreciate.  It gives the film a nice flow that rarely lets up as we follow Elio's journey as he progressively gets more and more in over his head.  It helps that the central character is likeable from the onset even as he tries to deal with the loss of his parents and find his place in the world.  Yonas Kibreab voices the character with impressive enthusiasm layered with tinges of sadness that's some depth to the character.  He and Zoe Saldaña share a believe rapport together as she navigates the best way to deal with her nephew who she's left to care for.  Saldaña does a solid job of balancing her character's conflicted situation where she wants to do the best she can for Elio but is equally overwhelmed with the responsibility thrust on her which stalled her career.  There's a fair amount of subtle nuance to it that's easy to miss among the cornucopia of visuals thrown on screen, but it adds so much to the overall story especially in the back half of the film.  Brad Garrett and Remy Edgerly bring a similar sort of energy to Lord Grigon and his son Glordon.  Garrett's deep baritone voice works well for his seemingly aggressive character while Edgerly provides a solid contrast as his son who's not interested in his dad's work.  Edgerly and Kibreab make for a fun duo in the middle portion of the film with their friendship feeling believable as they're both looking for acceptance and attention from their guardians.  It all may not be as emotionally deep or devastating as some of Pixar's other films such as Coco or Inside Out, but Elio will leave you feeling good when you walk out of the theater.

MOVIE REVIEW: GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 3
























Still reeling from the loss of Gamora, Peter Quill must rally his team to defend the universe and protect one of their own. If the mission is not completely successful, it could possibly lead to the end of the Guardians as we know them.

Review:

I'm not sure if James Gunn set out to make the world's most expense Roger Corman sci-fi epic but that's what his big, messy Marvel swan song, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, ends up being.  His trilogy capper is untethered on multiple levels as he splashes every bit of his sensibilities onscreen which boarders on self indulgent on multiple occasions.  It’s a strange, goofy and overlong conclusion to one of the few Marvel series that definitely carved out its own niche in the overall monolith of a franchise.  This entry is far more engaging and funnier than the second entry which leaned far too heavily into its daddy issues.  Here, it does feel like the director and cast are riffing on what worked in the original by delivering more team banter and emotional arches with the latter never feeling as fresh as it did in the original.  Bradley Cooper's Rocket Racoon serves as the emotional center of this entry as his character gets the spotlight as a series of flashbacks explore his backstory with surprising emotional depth even though it involves more talking animals.  Those sequences intersperse the main action, but they build to a heartbreaking moment which hits with the weight of a sledgehammer.  Unfortunately, the main action doesn't carry that sort of emotional heft as the team moves from one visually impressive action set piece to another.  The main cast of Pratt, Saldaña, Bautista and Klementieff are all solid, but the script seems content with only superficial moments of character growth.  Their familiarity with the characters makes it more enjoyable than it should be with Karen Gillan standing out as she mines more out of her performance than what’s written on the page.  Likewise, Chukwudi Iwuji's performance as The Evolutionary is bigger than what the script affords him.  It’s a Shakespearian level of maniacal evil that should have been expanded on as opposed to other moments or characters like Will Poulter's Adam Warlock and Elizabeth Debicki's Ayesha who could have been excised entirely.  At two and half hours it’s a film that's too choppy to earn that rather lengthy runtime which make its final act feel more like an exercise in attrition even though the battles are impressively staged.  Ultimately, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 doesn't quite stick the landing the way it should, but it still delivers the kind of quirky, emotional uniqueness that made it stand out amongst the other cookie cutter films that populate the Marvel Universe.

MOVIE REVIEW: AVATAR: THE WAY OF WATER

 






















Jake Sully and Ney'tiri have formed a family and are doing everything to stay together. However, they must leave their home and explore the regions of Pandora. When an ancient threat resurfaces, Jake must fight a difficult war against the humans.

The first Avatar was a huge film and leave it to James Cameron to deliver a larger more immersive experience with the sequel Avatar: The Way of Water.  Cameron's film delivers some truly awe-inspiring visuals which feel like another high point in technical achievement akin to Star Wars or Jurassic Park.  So much so that this is the first film since the original Avatar that'd I'd recommend be seen in 3D.  The massive world that is painted onscreen is so incredibly detailed and vibrant that it's almost overwhelming.  Cameron is fully aware of what he's achieved and reiterates the point with a handful of "wow" sequences which simply serve to show off the technical tenacity even if it doesn't do much for the actual story.  The story does tend to take a backseat to the overall experience almost to a detriment.  

This entry's plot focuses more on family/legacy drama with splashes of the overreaching conflict from the original.  It’s fairly straightforward with nearly everything playing out the way you'd expect with a scant amount of surprises.  It doesn't help matters that the story is so large and expansive that it lacks a defined focus even with a heavy emphasis on characters.  Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldaña's characters from the original still anchor the film but they play more of a secondary supporting role here with the film focusing more time on their children. 

Those characters are lead by Sigourney Weaver, Jamie Flatters and Britain Dalton and do their best with fairly clichéd roles.  Their characters are the film's focus, but they are never as engaging as they should be.  Stephen Lang fairs slightly better here as the resurrected Na'vi avatar of Colonel Miles Quaritch.  Lang, again, nails the gruff, laser focused solider with the script adding a subplot with his son who's gone native in his absence. His son, Miles "Spider" Socorro, played by Jack Champion is one of those characters that stands out for all the wrong reasons.  Champion isn't a strong enough of a performer to make the character work even though he serves an important role in the story.  It’s a shame because it does take you of the moment every time he pops up on screen.  

It’s one of the few glaring missteps overall but it's easy to overlook especially once the final act starts.  Cameron delivers a hodgepodge of his greatest hits by borrowing moments and beats from Aliens, The Abyss, Terminator and Titanic in a rousing finale which reminds you why he's one of the best big film directors in history.  Avatar: The Way of Water is a testament to his talent as a director and his ability to deliver the kind of memorable big screen experience which have been lacking in the current glut of superhero.
