Review:
Stilted acting, outrageous gore and inventive camera work made the original Evil Dead a horror camp classic. A remake of that film is terribly unnecessary just like all the other unnecessary remakes but it’s a trend that won’t stop so I will. This re-imagining focuses on the same cabin with a group of pretty 20 somethings expect one of them is trying to get clean this go around. When the action starts it engages in a full throttle assault on the senses. Fede Alvarez gives the original it due with a ton of winks and nods but while delivering an over the top gross out that’s as campy as the original. The trailers suggested a more serious tone but the film is just as stupid as the original. The characters are intentionally idiotic and moronic. The FX are notch though, delivering some of the best gross out gore I’ve seen in a long while. Jane Levy, in heavy make up for the better part of the film, does her best to add a little something to her character but it’s not really required for carnival of carnage that borrows heavily from all kinds of horror sources even recalling The Exorcist on occasion. It all builds to a rather thrilling 3rd act that’s rather insane but satisfying at the same time.

I refuse to read any Evil Dead reviews until I see it in 2 weeks, so I'm just stopping by, saying Hi! :D
ReplyDeleteIt's a lot of fun man, I hope you enjoy it!
DeleteYou definitely liked this one more than I did. Although I will say, that 3rd act was pretty stellar.
ReplyDeleteGood review!
It was stupid in a good way and really well shot like you mentioned.
DeleteAfter reading the reviews I knew you would like this movie. Since I am no fan of horror I will be skipping this one, although I do want to see Army of Darkness because it looks hilarious!

Yeah this is much more a horror buffs film than anything else, you won't miss much James.
Deleteugh, it seems like every horror movie today (minus the Rec series), pays some homage to the past greats. but, like you, i thought the original was moronic and stupid. but i thought, given the impressive special effects i noticed from the commercials, this would at least be superior in that sense (the original's effects were absolutely laughable). so, because of that, i am still interested to see this. maybe a rental?
ReplyDeleteThe original was dumb and unintentionally so, 2nd one just embrached it. This one is pretty much the original with better FX and some twist. It'd be worth your time as a rental.
DeleteNot sure whether or not I will see this - I am just not sure that I would enjoy it. There is something (I don't know what) unappealing about the Evil Dead films
ReplyDeleteGlad you enjoyed it!
K :-)
I hear you K, its a franchise that really appeals to a certain demo. This one was pretty funny, funnier than the trailer let own.
DeleteBeing a fan of the original, I was pretty bummed by what I saw. However, I do have to say I enjoyed a good-portion of myself watching all of the non-stop blood, action, and gore. Nice review Dan.
ReplyDeleteThanks for reading Dan! I didn't think it was perfect but I found it more enjoyable than I expected.
DeleteGood review! I really loved it, and it didn't disappoint me. I was excited earlier in the year, but really really really excited two weeks before it was released. (Mostly because I only watched the original for the first time two weeks ago!)
ReplyDeleteI'm glad to see you enjoyed it, Daniel. I'll probably become a regular on your blog soon enough.Check my review out if you have the time (http://filmcraziest.wordpress.com/2013/04/09/evil-dead-2013/).
Thank you Daniel, I really enjoyed it, thought it was lots of fun! Thanks for reading, I'll check out your blog!
DeleteThis is off topic, but do you plan to review 42? I am going to make a "Review Round-Up" of the film tomorrow or Saturday and wanted to add a link to your review in the post.

Unsure at the moment, this weekend flick is still up in the air.
DeleteWent and saw it this past weekend. I was so disappointed that Bruce Campbell decided not to be in the movie. It would have been a better movie in my opinion. It looked like they were trying to vamp up the original but there was a fail somewhere. I can't explain that. Love your review.

Totally trying to vamp up the original, I thought it was funny but I could see how you could be turned off by it. Missing Bruce Campbell is hard to get over!
