MOVIE REVIEW: TOM AND JERRY

 

A legendary rivalry reemerges when Jerry moves into New York City's finest hotel on the eve of the wedding of the century, forcing the desperate event planner to hire Tom to get rid of him. As mayhem ensues, the escalating cat-and-mouse battle soon threatens to destroy her career, the wedding, and possibly the hotel itself.

Review:

Tom and Jerry is very much a throwback on multiple levels.  The titular pair are some of the most iconic characters in the history of animation with this being the second outing on the big screen.  It’s not the mess that the 1992 film but still scattershot and uneven for its runtime.  The live action hybrid works fairly well even though there are multiple times that you can tell the cast is reacting to air or placeholders.  Its still a very impressive feat on a technical level and the animations looks wonderfully fluid.  It’s hard to watch this without getting some Who Framed Roger Rabbit vibes in spots with a more family friendly approach.  The story and direction are harmlessly broad for the most part but there are bits of edge, some of which works well while others fall flat.  Tom and Jerry mostly stay true to their classic iterations which is a win for people who remember the classic shorts.  The human cast is solid if bland with Chloë Grace Moretz carrying the larger portion of the film, Moretz is a talented actress but her delivery here feels a little wooden and uninspired.  Her character never really connects as a fully formed entity but just a vessel to move the story along.  Michael Peña likewise doesn’t feel as naturalistic as he usually does which leads me to be believe that there might be a disconnect between the live actors and their animated counter parts.  As such, we are left with an overlong film that works in spots but lulls in others.  Tim Story’s film would have benefited from trimming but overall it’s a solid mindless family film that’ll keep most kids entertained.

Cindy Prascik's Review of My Spy








































With reopened cinemas having nothing new to show for their trouble, this weekend I again relied on the kindness of streaming for something to watch and write about.

On the docket, the family comedy My Spy. Desperate times and all.

Spoiler level here will be mild, nothing you wouldn't know from the trailers.

Already on thin ice over a botched mission, a government agent becomes entangled with the family he's meant to be observing.

My dear reader(s), way back when we had new movies in cinemas and a person sitting directly behind me could happily spit popcorn into my hair for a couple hours, trailers for My Spy ran before pretty much everything I saw. It's the kind of dopey comedy I'd never spend money to see at a cinema (unless Gary Oldman were in it), but that I will unashamedly enjoy the minute it crosses my path for free. I may be damning with faint praise when I say this movie did not disappoint.

My Spy leans heavily on the likability of its cast. The adorable Chloe Coleman steals the show from her adult costars, while Dave Bautista's talents aren't stretched too much as the not-as-dumb-as-he-looks titular spy. Parisa Fitz-Henley, Ken Jeong, and Kristen Schaal nicely round out the principals. Action sequences are fun and mild enough for younger viewers, and the humor is cute and obvious, nothing too off-color. It's the sort of predictable picture that will never set the world on fire, but it's perfect for when you just want to be entertained and not challenged. (There's that faint praise again!)

My Spy runs a quick 99 minutes and is rated PG13 for "action/violence and language."

There's nothing clever or cutting edge about My Spy, but when the world's as terrifying as it is right now, its brand of benign escapism may be just what the doctor ordered.

Of a possible nine Weasleys, My Spy gets six.

MOVIE REVIEW: THE HANGOVER PART 3

Review:

“The End.” “It All Ends.” “It Ends.” Etc… I really hope those taglines at the top of the posters are a firm promise. Some series really shouldn’t go past its original film. It’s fairly apparent that The Hangover was the kind of movie that never should have been a franchise. It would have been a smart decision to avoid sequels, like Phillips did with Old School. Instead we were dealt one of the laziest sequels ever. This 3rd film is only marginally better. I do give Phillips credit for mixing up the formula this go around even though it creates a weird serious / comedic tone throughout. As a comedy, it’s never consistently funny. At best it, delivers a handful of chuckles here and there along with long stretches of nothing. By nothing, I mean nothing. No fun, no thrills, no suspense. The audience is just left wading through uninteresting exposition until we get to the next set piece. The cast is just as disinterested as most of the audience, Cooper and Helms in particular. They both seem content in delivering lines from the past films and not much else, not that I really blame them. Zach Galifianakis and Ken Jeong both get larger roles here and are given free reign to do whatever they want. Both take their characters to extremes with grating results. John Goodman and Melissa McCarthy are terribly underused in one note characters. The film has a strange feel about it, like it’s disinterested in itself. The few chuckles that come through don’t last long enough to reach a zenith. It only finds a tad breath of energy in a post credit scene which comes after an awkward slow-mo montage. Let’s hope they don’t renege on their promise to let it end.
