MOVIE REVIEW: A HAUNTING IN VENICE

Kenneth Branagh's third Agatha Christie adaptation is just as lavishly directed and performed as his first two films, but the added dash of horror spices up the formula to the murder mystery template.  Branagh gives this entry a decidedly different feel from the start as he makes great use of Venice on Halloween to set up an unsettling, spooky feel to the film.  Once the film settles into its primary setting of the haunted palazzo Branagh throws in plenty of visual flourishes which makes wonderful use of off kilter angles and framing which make the film far more effective and engaging than if he'd played it more straightforward.  The cast is again made up of a wonderful assortment of impressive international actors.  Branagh leads the way with a slightly more weathered and cynical take on Hercule Poirot in this entry which gives this iteration of the character some much needed texture and depth outside of his sleuthing skills.  Tina Fey joins the fray as Ariadne Oliver, an Agatha Christie proxy in the novels, with mixed results which leaves you feeling she's miscast in the role. Fey does her best but you get the sense somebody like Rachel Brosnahan would have been a better fit for this role.  On the other end of the spectrum, Michelle Yeoh leaves a strong impression on the film even with her limited screen time.  Kelly Reilly and Jamie Dornan do just enough to make their characters interesting but sadly both roles are fairly one dimensional.  Jude Hill follows up his impressive performance in Branagh's award winning Belfast with another strong turn here.  Hill possess such a natural ease on screen as he delivers lines with seasoned actors that you can't help but be impressed with the level of talent this 11 year old brings to the production.  His interaction with Branagh early on is a surprising high point in the film which sets up a nice payoff in the end once the film concludes its twisty murder mystery.  A Haunting in Venice shows there's still life in this film series, something Branagh's character reiterates onscreen as his legendary detective finds renewed purpose.

Cindy Prascik's Review of Calvary










































Dearest Blog, over the long holiday weekend, I finally, FINALLY got to see a movie to which I've been looking forward for nearly all of 2014: Calvary.

Spoiler level here will be mild, nothing that isn't divulged by the trailers.

After being threatened in the confessional, a priest in a small Irish town has a week to decide how to address the situation.

Well, dear reader(s), what can I say except Calvary proved more than worth the wait. The whole Internet has not the capacity to hold all the good things I have to say about this movie, so I'll try to hit the high points and keep this short...or...you know...short for me.

Calvary is headlined by Brendan Gleeson, and, if you think you've seen the performance of the year from Eddie Redmayne or Jake Gyllenhaal or Michael Keaton, well, roll all those up into one and you might get halfway to Gleeson's work in Calvary.

He is magnificent as a good man caught in an unspeakably bad situation, and his interactions with his parishioners swing from hilarious to heartbreaking without missing a beat. Solid turns by Chris O'Dowd, Dylan Moran, Aidan Gillen, David Wilmot, and especially Kelly Reilly round out a cast that never hits a sour note.

Peacefully beautiful Irish locations seem at odds with shocking actions and words. The film's grim mood is broken by laugh-out-loud moments; it's serious as a heart attack, but never miserable. The movie manages to show faith as a good thing, without ever being preachy, and acknowledges horrors perpetrated by Catholic clergy while always maintaining THIS priest as a good and strong, if complicated, man.

Though it's hardly action packed, there is not a single dull moment as Calvary keeps its secret right up to an unsettling and strangely hopeful ending.

Calvary clocks in at 102 minutes and is rated R for "sexual references, language, brief strong violence, and some drug use."

Though it never earned a wide-release in the US, Calvary is now available on BluRay, digital download, and VOD.

DO NOT MISS IT.

Of a possible nine Weasleys, Calvary gets all nine and wants Arthur and Molly to have a few more kids.

MOVIE REVIEW: FLIGHT

Review:

After watching Flight I’d come to the realization that Denzel Washington had been churning interesting and impressive performances in some rather lackluster films for a good while. So much so that I’d almost consider him unappreciated, considering how some Academy Award winners have been known to phone it in more often that not. Flight is a bloated ham fisted film that’s elevated by its incredible leading man. Denzel Washington is the show here and the film dips significantly whenever he’s off screen. Thankful he’s onscreen for the better part of the film and he’s entrancing even though he’s dealing with a script that rams every cliché it could think of into the characters and plots. Washington performance is so much more impressive considering what he’s handcuffed with and I shudder to think of what a lesser actor would have done in this role. Robert Zemeckis has been removed from live action film directing for a while and outside of truly spectacular and horrifying crash sequence he overdoes everything. There’s a scarcity of quiet moments where he’s just pulls back and lets Denzel do his thing. Instead there’s are some eye rolling bad musical cues to hammer home each point not to mention an overused religion slant which is just as frustrating as the rest of the script. Denzel doesn’t just carry this film he drags it kicking and screaming to respectability that alone deserves kudos and awards.

Review:

Outside of general knowledge and a few episodes of Star Trek: The Next Generation, yes I’m that nerdy, I have no real knowledge of Sherlock Holmes or any connection to his literary incarnation. As a result, I was a blank slate for Guy Ritchie’s re-imagining of this iconic character and was met with mixed returns. Ritchie’s style and eye work just fine to give this version a visceral hook and freshness lacking form previous versions. He moves the film along at a brisk pace even if some portions feel like they could have been left on the cutting room floor. His biggest advantage is showcasing Downey and Law’s palatable on screen chemistry as Holmes and Watson. The two play off each other incredibly well and give the audience a real sense of their camaraderie. Downey, with an excellent British accent that borders on unintelligible at times, brings a fun bit of manic energy mixed with eccentricity all the while maintaining Holmes’s keen power of detection. He’s like an 18th century Batman sans the mask. Law’s work as Watson is a nice updated and he gives the character depth that isn’t written into the script. Eddie Marsan does strong work in a small role as Inspector Lestrade. Not faring nearly as well is Rachel McAdams and Mark Strong. McAdam’s feels miscast and her character isn’t really much use to the overall story aside from a movie long set up for a possible sequel. The script doesn’t do her character any favors; instead the romantic relationship feels forced and unconvincing. Mark Strong’s role suffers a similar fate as he isn’t required to do much except look villainous and utter dialogue in a monotone voice. Both roles are examples of the main issue with this film in general. The script is convoluted mess, the crux of the main mystery is something about a Masonic like group mixed with supernatural elements, and it’s not nearly as engrossing as it should be for its sometime laborious 2 hours plus runtime. The finale feels hallow as it seems more interested in setting up the sequel than wrapping up this film’s plot points. Even with these issues it’s a fun film that is saved by Downey and Law’s strong work.
